Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us online. Our team of 9 volunteers: Amal Paonaskar, Melanie Paget, Dominic Harrison, Marc Tevendale, Laura Dean, Kate Lillywhite, Amy Tweddle, William Hall and Emily Petrides will be traveling to the village of Chibobo, this summer to assist in the construction of a hammer mill. A vital part of the EGP ethos is making sure that the local community is involved at every step of the process. To ensure this we will be working with a Zambian Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) called The Green Living Movement (GLM) who work with the local communities to establish initiatives that best meet the needs of the people. About GLM: GLM is a well established NGO (registered since 2000) and has worked with EGP since 2002. Their primary focus is enhancing the livelihoods of marginalised rural communities and sustainable management of the natural environment. GLM currently works with five rural communities supporting community led initiatives in a capacity building manner allowing local communities to reduce their dependence on GLM and other support agencies for their basic inputs. Their main projects include sustainable agriculture, crop marketing and diversification, community health and education and infrastructural development. About the project: EGP worked with GLM in 2005 building a hammer mill in the Nambo village (). The success of the project inspired other communities to propose similar projects. Our team along with GLM and the Chibobo community will be constructing a hammer mill (to grind maize) in Chibobo. The project will be managed by an independent board elected by development groups affiliated to GLM, and the local development groups will directly benefit through shares of the earnings from the project to support other initiatives. The community members of Chibobo and the surrounding villages will also benefit by the reduced distance to a mill allowing them to re-invest saved time. The construction will involve erecting two buildings: one will contain the mill room, a store and an office and the other will house the mill operator. All the money raised will go directly into project costs (materials, labor etc.) i.e. our team will be funding our own flights, vaccination and other such expenses.
