Shelter - Vertical Rush · 19 March 2009 ·

We exist to defend the right to a safe home and fight the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and society. We believe that home is everything.

Story

The event is now over!  Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us over the last month, we have beated our fundraising target of £500!   This page should still accept donations, so please keep giving!

Now the important stuff:  We both completed the event in 14 minutes and 5 seconds; Jo was placed 582nd, and Em 583rd, solving the age-old problem of whether the Chicken or Egg came first.  But the icing on the cake was when we won the award for the Most Inventive Fundraisers!

We have had a fantastic time preparing for, and taking part in this event.  Once again, thank you to all who have helped us in our efforts.  Click on the pictures to the left to see more photos of our Vertical Rush day!

Emily and Jo are going to climb up some stairs to raise money for Shelter.  Since we are climbing up the 920 stairs (that's 42 floors) of Tower 42, the City of London's tallest building, we think we need some help :S

To motivate us, we'll do the event (including the champagne reception at Gibson Hall afterwards) in full fancy dress, anyone can suggest or vote for a costume when they donate.

Voting for costumes is now CLOSED but
please feel free to donate anyway - we would still really appreciate any support you can give us!

We will be dressing up as:

Chicken (Jo) + Egg (Em)

PLEASE NOTE THAT, DUE TO HEALTH AND SAFETY RESTRICTIONS, EMILY REGRETS THAT SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WEAR THE EGG COSTUME WHILE CLIMBING THE STAIRS.  SHE WILL STILL WEAR IT FOR THE REST OF THE DAY AND FOR THE CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION :D

Even though you can no longer vote, we would be interested to see your Costume ideas... so if you have one please add it to the list!

Thanks for visiting our  fundraising page, please sponsor us =D

The Small Print:
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Shelter gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

The event we are taking part in is called Vertical Rush - for more information on the staggering feat that we are attempting, go to http://england.shelter.org.uk/what_you_can_do/events_and_challenges/vertical_rush.

Deeply embarrassing pictures of us in ridiculous costume collapsing at the top of the building will, of course, be plastered all over facebook when we're done :D

Just in case anyone has noticed, we have been raising our fundraising target as we keep smashing it!  Thank you so much for your support - please keep donating!

Costume Leader Board (+ ideas):
e.g.  Wicked Witch of the West and Dorothy
        Tom and Jerry
        Bo-Peep and A Sheep
        Cop + Robber
        Cowboy + Indian
Alice in Wonderland + the White Rabbit
(note the chasing each other theme - good while running up stairs!)

Chicken + Egg
= £105  (Finally we'll know which came first!)
Bunch of Bananas = £95  (Bananas in Pyjamas!  But we're running up the stairs!)
Jack Sparrow + Capt. Barbossa/Bottle of Rum = £70
Cat Woman + Wonder Woman = £42 (we're liking the powerful woman thing!)
Captin Scarlet + Aqua Marina = £10
A Cardboard Box + A Trolleyfull of Plastic Bags = £10
Dick Dastardly + Muttley = £5
Clown + Dumbo = £2
Scooby Doo +
A Ghost = £1
A Sabretoothed Tiger + A Caveperson = £1

Vetoed Costumes (if we have vetoed your costume idea, feel free to email us and we will re-allocate your vote):
e.g. Mr Blobby - inappropriate due to overheating;
Bikini - inappropriate due to underheating

After much debate... Baz's vote has been re-allocated (mostly caus his other idea was so fantastic! but also due to the problems potentially caused by trying to climb stairs in a gorilla outfit) so we have changed
Banana + a Gorilla to Chicken + Egg
