Assalamu alaikum (peace be upon you) and thank you for visiting this JustGiving page at http://www.justgiving.com/embaraka
As you can see from this recent photo (February 2008, Hyde Park, London), Embaraka, thankfully, has responded well so far, to the chemotherapy and stem cell treatment that she underwent in October 2007, after a generous donation from an anonymous donor. Embaraka is a schoolteacher from Libya who is in the UK for treatment for blood cancer (chronic myeloid leukemia) because she can't get this treatment in her home country. She was originally successfully treated for this condition in 1999 and lived cancer free in Libya for many years but then had a relapse and went into a life threating stage called blast crisis early last year.
She returned to London in January 2007 and survived two brain haemorrhages while she waited for enough money to be collected to pay for the medical treatment she needed. Unfortunately, her family in Libya have run out of money paying for her medical costs and she is not entitled to free treatment or care on the NHS.
Embaraka is an amazingly courageous person and has struggled to live with great patience, faith and fortitude over this last year. We her friends want to see her continue to have that fighting chance. We are appealing to you to continue to help Embarka on her road to recovery with your donations and prayers because she still has a long way to go before the doctors can give her the all clear.
Embaraka has been discharged from hospital but needs to see her Consultant weekly for at least the next 3 months because she remains at risk of developing post-stem cell transplant complications such as infections or stem cell rejection. She is taking lots of medications daily and her doctors estimate that she will need to remain under the supervision of the Hammersmith hospital for a minimum of 2 years. Her post transplant costs are paid until April 2008 after which time the donations that we have collected as a result of this JustGiving page will have to be used to pay for remaining medical treatment.
We are really fortunate that the UK registered charity Muslim Global Relief (MGR) agreed to set up a special emergency account especially for Embaraka to help raise funds for her treatment. You can make a donation to them in one of 4 ways: 1) With your debit or credit card on this Justgiving page by clicking on 'Donate Now'; Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure and you have the added benefit of seeing how much progress is being made to reach our fundraising target. Muslim Global Relief will receive your money quickly and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
2) Going to the MGR website (http://www.muslimglobalrelief.com/) and donating onlirne by clicking on the Embaraka emergency appeal and following the links. If you'e making a large donation, this may be a more cost effective way of donating on line, because this JustGiving site charges MGR a 5% transaction fee (see details at bottom of page). 3) Making a cheque or postal order payable to 'MGR' and posting to MGR, PO Box 2018, Nelson, United Kingdom, BB9 7WB (please write 'Embaraka fund' on the back of the cheque);
4) Making a bank transfer to: MGR, HSBC Bank plc: Sort code: 40-15-17 Account Number: 81582526 (for international donors only, the SWIFT code is MIDLGB22). Again please use the reference 'Embaraka' for your bank transfer.
In all cases MGR will send you a receipt for your donation. If you have any problems with any of the above ways of payment, please contact MGR directly through their website.
So please, please- if you haven't yet made a donation-donate now and help save a life! "...and whoever who saves a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind." (Qur'an ch5:v32)
And please don't forget to mention Embaraka and all of us in your prayers! Wa 'salaamu alaikum Saliha and Iman
