RAISING MONEY FOR THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY
In February 2007, I will be raising money for charity by trekking across the Arctic - through Finland, Norway and Sweden - along with husky dogs and a cross-party group of MPs.
The trek is being organised by Westminster Challenge - an organisation created in 2006 to help MPs promote and fundraise for charities. I've signed up to the gym to get myself ready for the trek, and I'll be fundraising to support a range of charities including Cancer Research UK and Crimestoppers. In particular I'll be supporting the Children's Society, which is based in my constituency of Islington South & Finsbury.
The Children's Society aims to give all children the same chance in life, no matter how disadvantaged their background. The charity was established in the time of Dickens to keep children who were so-called ‘waifs and strays’ out of the workhouse. More than a century later it is still working for disadvantaged children – children who don’t have parents or guardians to support them, or children who arrive in this country on their own.
I strongly support their work with children at risk on the streets, children in trouble with the law, disabled children and young refugees. I want to make sure people know about the important work this charity does, and I want to raise as much money as possible to support them.
