<p class="ecxmsonormal" style="background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 16.2pt;"><span style="color: #800080;"><strong><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">In June 2011, I will be travelling on behalf of Oxford United Football Club as a volunteer with Kenyan Adventure to help work on local community projects in heavily impoverished regions of Kenya, east Africa. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I will be travelling with other volunteers as well as staff and two players from Oxford United.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p class="ecxmsonormal" style="background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 16.2pt;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The group will be based at The Walk Centre primary school during the 10 day trip in June. The teachers and Community Work with Children volunteers will be based at the school during weekdays, the latter of whom will help prepare and serve meals, play games with children and help out in classrooms. We have made arrangements for a number of PE/multi-sports classes during the day at the school, with view to potentially expanding this to young adults in the nearby slum area.</span></span></strong></span></p>
<p class="ecxmsonormal" style="background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 16.2pt;"><span style="color: #008000;"><strong><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">I am also hoping to work in a local maternity unit, to experience midwifery in Kenya, as I believe the experiences there will differ hugely to those I encounter as a midwife at The John Radcliffe, my usual place to work. I am hoping this trip will broaden my knowledge, and whilst there I hope to use my experience to perhaps make a difference, no matter how small this may be. </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; line-height: normal; mso-layout-grid-align: none;"><span style="color: #993300;"><strong><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">As part of the trip, we are also looking to raise £20,000 for the Oxford United Community Sports Trust, which will help build a sports facility near the Kassam Stadium in Oxford. </span><span class="textrun"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The trust does lots of work across Oxfordshire from excellence to community. The funds raised will add to the work done by the trust in some of these areas with young carers, adults suffering with mental health problems to twilight football on the wards with young people late at night. This trip will be used to support these initiatives giving people in Oxfordshire a chance to also engage in sport where maybe society or wealth has made it difficult for them to access facilities or teams in the past.</span></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"></span></strong></span></p>
