Walk of Life, Devises to Bath 21 miles · 21 May 2011

RUHX (formerly The Forever Friends Appeal) is the official NHS charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath. We’re here to make our place healthier, happier and stronger for the future. And we do that by supporting the extra extraordinary work that leads to exceptional care for everyone.

Story

Monday 23rd May  - Well it is all over, we loved every minute of the walk, it was great fun and really nice that Jess and myself done it together. I think the bit of training we done paid off as we were at the finish before our supporters arrived, they got there in the end and it was great to see so many people along the way.
A massive heart felt thank you to every one for your support, no matter how large or small it means a lot to think that we have so many friends out there thinking about us. and an added plus is that neither of us suffered too badly yesterday either xx

Monday 16th May - It seems like we have been away for ages but we are finally home, with a van full to the roof and loads of washing and power washing to do. Not long now untill the big day, this Saturday, I am sure it will be fun but hard work at the same time. I think the plan this week is to train for the first few days of the week but then to rest before the walk. I am really looking forward to it now and think we are going to make a day of it with Charlie and Mark dropping us off, meeting us for lunch and finally at the finish. If anyone else wants to come along your all invited. We start at 9am at Devizes Wharf, Devizes, have lunch at 1pm at the Barge Inn, Bradford on Avon and finish at between 4-6pm at Sydney Gardens, Bath.
Monday 9th May
-
So we are now only 12 days away from the walk and it is getting exciting. I have been struggling with having the amount of time needed to train on too long walks so have decided to increase my fitness levels by doing a shorter walk but by matching it with a couple mile jog too. It seems to be working as the last one was much easier. We are going away tonight to do an academy training school tomorrow and then on to Duns for the BYMX setting up on Thursday. I will be sure to take my trainers with me to fit in a few walks and runs whilst away. It might help us all as eight days in a sprinter with Charlie and Mark might result in one of us not coming back.
Tue 19th April
- Training has started over the past couple of weeks. I have now done a few little walks to get into the swing of things, 6.7 miles is the furthest I have been so far. This not counting walking around the MX trax putting the banners up which I am sure is more.

I think Charlie loves it when Mummy goes for a walk as the last one I was gone two hours and he spent the whole time over the track riding his quad whilst TC was practicing starts, and yes we have now had to tell him to slow down.
Also treated myself to a new pair of trainers, in the sale of course with special socks, lets see if these stop any blisters.
Anyway nice weather so best get doing some work so that I can go walking later.
Mark is warn out but feeling good as only two more days of radiotherapy left now.More updates to follow.

After being a professional sportsman for over 10 years Mark retired from racing at the end of 2008 to start our own business. We are blessed to have a cheeky little boy, Charlie who is now three and a half.
In November 2010 our world stopped as we were told that Mark has stage four Bowel Cancer and secondry lung Cancer. He started three months of Chemo just before Christmas. This will be one to look back on I am sure as I also suffered with Swine flu on Christmas eve and Charlie had a cold, living in three different houses and comming together for an hour on Christmas morning was not ideal but I am sure we will look back with a smile on our faces thinking of Mark opening pressies with Charlie with a face mask on so he did not catch any infection.
With the Chemo finished Mark is now in his last two weeks of Radiotherapy which he has every day at the RUH (Hospital) in Bath.
He is then looking forward to a break of about 6 weeks untill he is rescanned and we see how well his body is reacting to the treatment.
He will have a major opperation in June so an messages on Face Book or text jokes are greatly received to keep the spirits up. Then finally a further three months of Chemo followed by a second opperation.
Hopefully by the end of the year this ordeal will be behind us and we look forward to starting 2012 with a revived spring in our step.

I have decided to do this 21 mile walk to raise some well needed money for the RUH (Hospital) in Bath where Mark is receiving some of his treatment. This is also where Charlie was born and I was treated with swine flu.
