My story

Hi Everyone,

...

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

So, I’m going to trek theGreat Wall of China in October 2009 and I am hoping to raise lots of money for Brain Tumour UK. I have been volunteering for this charity since 2006 and its very close to my

I am dedicating this trek to Dave Wilson who is currently receiving treatments for his brain tumour. This is his story told by his sister Debbie...

...

Over Christmas Dave started to experience headaches which became more persistent and painful into January. After some persuaion Dave went back to see his local doctor, twenty four Paracetamol later he was back home. He went back to work the next day but ended up being taken ill. He was taken by ambulance to Swansea hospital and givin a scan. Swelling and fluid showed up and when drained he started to feel a little better. The results came back a week later that he had had an abscess of which 75% had been cleared with the draining. The rest we were told would clear as Dave's brain started to heal. We were euphoric that he had seemingly got away with something not too serious.

 ...

Within weekes our bubble was burst as Dave was unwell again, this time while working in Ireland ( i have subsequently banned him from ever working in Ireland!) I called him one morning and he sounded punch drunk, he told me that he felt incredibly tired. My stomach lurched as it started to dawn on me that it probably wasn't an abscess after all. Dave flew home and was met by his wife Nicky and our Dad who took him straight to The Royal London where he was put under the excellent care of Mr Elsmore. He removed 90% of what we were told was a tumour, with 10% being in a placed deemed too risky to remove.

 ....

Friday 13th March - results day. A date so ironic that it could only be good news, surely? When i got the call at work from our Dad to say that Dave's tumour was malignant GBM grade IV I realised that there was nothing funny about that day at all. I now look at things as BC and AD (before cancer and after diagnosis).

....

Dave's treatment has started and he has had his first session of radiotherapy on Thursday 2nd April, one of thirty sessions and his chemo treatment has started today 6th April. Dave has the best team around him, although not all medically trained. There is Nicky, Carmella and I, thats Nurse, Sister and Matron or as Dave calls us the Wicthes of Eastwick. We are there to give food, diet and complementary therapy advice and also to administer large doses of nagging. The Doctor of Well Being is our Mum who cooks, cleans and looks after Dave as if he were in a 5 star hotel. Dr Rock is our Dad, always there to support us with, of course, the 24 hour taxi servie. Doctor Calm is our brother Andrew who researches new treatments and then deciphers them into languages we can all understand. The other team, medically trained have been fantastic. Mr Elsmore, Dr Plowman and Kirsty the Oncology nurse who has had to put up with me not only phoning her but texting and emailing her with the latest treatments etc. When faced with a stubborn sister demanding to know if the urine from a Yak inOuter Mongolia would be a miracle cure she has handled it all patiently and professionally! But of course the most positive member of the team is Dave. His positivity and good humour has been humbling. He personifies the role of big brother perfectly, strong brave and protective. If anyone can kick the arse of GBM it's my brother.
