Hearing Dogs for Deaf People - Firewalking · 5 June 2008

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds such as the smoke alarm, alarm clock, intruder alarms and baby monitors. These amazing dogs also help deaf people to leave loneliness behind by providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Story

YES - I DID IT!

Despite my best efforts praying for bad weather, the fire walk challenge took place at Hearing Dogs' headquarters near High Wycombe on Friday 20th June as planned, preceded by a barbecue for walkers and supporters - now there was someone with a sense of humour :-)

The picture shows the fire after it had been burning for a while - the flames had died down by the time we walked (thus saving my nifty trousers), but the temperature was still more than 1200 degrees...bear in mind that 300 is enough to burn flesh and 400 enough to melt aluminium...

Thanks to the excellent training provided, everyone completed the challenge. The only picture I have of me actually walking is unfortunately too dark for this site, but I'll attach an 'official' one when it's available.

My aim was to raise £250 and, so far, I'm delighted to say that we've hit £345. It has to be said, though, that although I did the walk, it's thanks to you - to my family, friends and colleagues - that this has been achieved, and thanks to Hearing Dogs themselves for organising such a super event. Special thanks go to Andy, for being my first sponsor and driving 4.5 hours there and back to support me, and to Berik, for promoting this site so brilliantly on Flickr.

I am so proud that we've been able to help this wonderful charity - thanks again to you all!
