Story

I DID IT!

On Sunday 10th May 2009, I completed the toughest cycling event I have ever entered: the 112 miles Fred Whitton Challenge (http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk), taking place in the Lake District:

It took me 8 hours and 3 minutes to ride 112 miles of mountain roads that included passes such as Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose, alongside 1200 other cyclists.
Poor road surfaces and dangerous descents and horrid weather conditions in the last 15 miles all added to the fun on the day, but I didn't walk, even up the 33% slopes of Hardknott Pass.

Although I was riding for Macmillan, my thoughts were with Ken Middlemiss, who first told me about the Fred Whitton Challenge and was meant to ride it with me this year. Ken has been in Hospital since 20th March, very slowly recovering from the serious injuries, particularly to the head, that he sustained in a collision with a van. I hope to cycle with him again soon.

I feel very grateful however to be able to choose to push myself as hard as possible on such hard rides. This choice is simply not available to those who are affected by cancer, directly, or through a family member they have to support. Macmillan Cancer Support are there to lighten up the load and guarantee better care. We can all help.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Macmillan Cancer Support gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
