This summer Alex Pavitt and Tom Priestner (both age 17) will be cycling 3000km in 23 days around Europe raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. We will aim to cycle around 100 miles per day, and the trip will take us through 8 countries. We will begin our journey in Bilbao, Spain, on the 6th July, then move down to the Mediterranean, going through France, Monaco and Italy. From here we will move up through Turin to Switzerland, then back into France for the push up through Belgium and the Netherlands. We will then take an overnight ferry to Hull and finish on the 30th July back in Manchester. You can see the full route here.

We are cycling in memory of Alex’s neighbour Christine Guilfoyle - Christine was one of the unlucky ones with MS, following her diagnosis, her condition declined with remarkable speed.  She became physically disabled to the point where she was ultimately bed-ridden.  Worse still, the illness had a dramatic impact on her mental and cognitive abilities.  Within a couple of years, she was transformed from a bright, highly intelligent woman to someone who was barely able to respond to basic questions.  She died at the age of only 50, as the result of nothing more than a simple chest infection, her body no longer able to cope.  The speed and nature of Christine’s decline was relatively unusual, even for this disease.  But MS affects over 100,000 people in the UK alone, with some 50 new cases diagnosed every week.  Many of those cases will progress eventually to cause severe disability.  The MS Society carries out an invaluable role both in supporting those suffering from the illness and in helping to fund continue research into potential treatments.
