Story

Jane, Neil, Tracey, Gemma, Mark and Mal will be taking part in the Great Kent Bike Race on 14th June 2009 to raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent.

For those who know Neil, in particular, you will appreciate the challenge that a 60 mile bike race will prove to be!

Our daughter, Eva Lily ,was born 1st June 2008 weighing 8lb 3oz. Eva was transferred to N.I.C.U at William Harvey Hospital shortly after her birth as she was very poorly, suffering from a serious infection and having fits which deprived her brain of oxygen.  On arrival at N.I.C.U, Eva's prognosis was devastatingly poor as her brain has been damaged, her fits were uncontrollable and her vital organs were not functioning properly.

It is through the expertise, dedication and love of the staff in the N.I.C.U. at William Harvey that Eva survived her ordeal and we were able to take her home after 16 days. During the time we spent with Eva at N.I.C.U we, as parents, were also shown amazing compassion and care. We were always encouraged to look after Eva as much as we possibly could to help us bond with her and the nurses regularly wrote notes and cards to us from Eva to keep us updated on all of her progress!

Eva is now a beautiful, happy and inquisitive baby who has amazed us all by reaching her milestones so far.  She has surpassed anything we ever expected of her and we know how lucky we are thanks to N.I.C.U as, without the emergency care they gave to Eva, this could have been a very different story.

N.I.C.U is usually associated with caring for premature babies but, every so often, a full term baby like Eva comes along and needs their help too, so this unit and the work they do is truly invaluable.

Although part of the East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust the N.I.C.U Unit still rely heavily on charitable donations and fund raising by grateful parents such as Jane and Neil.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust Charitable Fund gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Despite the credit crunch, please put your hand in your pocket and sponsor us now!
