Story

Everything But The Kitchen Sink...

The race to the Atlas Mountains!

Established as a non-profit group in 2009, Everything but the kitchen sink was set up to work with a diverse range of charities to raise both funds and profile for various causes. The race to the Atlas Mountains, our inaugural mission, sees us teaming up with UK charity Water for Africa.

Water for Africa works with communities in Africa to achieve a sustainable future; providing water and preventative healthcare, they seek to give individuals, families and communities the basic tools needed to change their own lives and destinies.

Nearly half of all people living in developing countries suffer from health problems caused by water and sanitation deficits. Considering that the cost of a basic bore hole to provide long term water supply to a village is just £2-3000, helping us to achieve our modest target will go a huge way towards improving the lives of a number of African communities. The race to the Atlas Mountains is taking place in June 2010, over approximately two weeks. Our mission will see teams trawling across Europe and Northern Africa, via a number of provisional checkploints detailed below. The race will be both a test of stamina and resource, covering a route of epic proportions in as little time as possible.

Provisional Route

Cardiff Castle

London (Trafalgar Square)

Brussels (Mannekin Pis)

Paris (Eiffel Tower)

Bordeaux (Pont de Pierre)

Madrid (Plaza Mayor)

Gibraltor (O'Hara's Battery- Highest point)

Tangiers (Grand Socco)

Marrakech (Djemaa el Fna Square)

The Atlas Mountains (The summit)

This trip will involve boats, buses, cars and trains with each of the three man teams impeded by the physical obstacle of a kitchen sink to lug around! The climax of the journey is a five day ascent of the imposing Atlas Mountains which overlook the Sahara Desert.

Naturally the costs of this trip are ALL going to be met by the participants, with the six month planning phase (starting on January 1st 2010) allowing each team to use all of their nous and initiative to beg, blag or borrow anything that will make the journey easier. And here’s where you can help…

You can make a contribution here on Just Giving to the overall donation, but there are also a number of interesting ways in which you can both follow the journey and contribute to its success. Join our Facebook or MySpace groups to keep tabs on the race to meet our target and visit our website to find out more about what a difference your donations will make.

Furthermore, as a grass roots initiative, we are reliant upon YOUR help, so if you can help in any other way please do; whether it be through offering lifts, accommodation, food or equipment at any step along the way. Our teams are pan-European in nationality, comprising Welsh, English, Belgian, French and Italian members. Check out our route to see if we cross your path…
