Soldiers from 3 Sqn 22 Engineer Regiment will be running the entire length of Britain to raise vital funds to provide accommodation for parents of sick children and help for soldiers injured in service.  40 Royal Engineers will set off from John O’Groats on 18th May, aiming to complete the 874 miles in 11 days, arriving at Lands End on Saturday 29th May.  The team will be covering approximately 85 miles per day in a relay team of ten and are asking the general public to come and support them and donate funds to their worthy cause along the route.

The event has been organised to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) - the UK’s leading Charity providing free accommodation for families of sick children close to hospitals - and Help for Heroes.

Sgt Amey one of the team members has a particular link to RMHC, and the support the Charity gives to families with children in hospital, after his son Finley was diagnosed with the rare Apert's Syndrome. Finley has undergone a number of major operations at the specialist Oxford Children’s Hospital since his birth in 2009 and the House has enabled Lee and his wife, Diane, to stay minutes away at all times, despite living over an hour away in Wiltshire.

Sgt Amey said “The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) at Oxford has been a lifesaver for me and my family while Finley has had to undergo a number of operations. The house enabled myself, my wife and Finley’s older sister to stay close during his life-saving surgery and became a real ‘home from home’ on the weeks we have stayed there. I am delighted to take part in this challenge.  We hope to raise as much money as possible to help fund the £140,000 annual running costs for the fantastic support provided at Ronald McDonald House in Oxford.”

Andrew Tee, Fundraising Coordinator from RMH Oxford said, “Thanks to Lee and all the soldiers for undertaking such an incredible challenge. The money raised will make a real difference to families staying at the Oxford Children’s Hospital. We have 18 rooms in the House enabling families to stay close to their sick child instead of having to travel miles each day. In the first three months of this year at the Oxford house alone we were able to accommodate 223 families and we are keen to help more. We wish them all the best of luck with their challenge.”
