The specifically designed functions of the CRU (visible and audible) enable the user to speak to the crowd more effectively without causing panic and confusion amongst people, allowing for a clear route to be made quickly. In dense traffic, a CRU can fit through small gaps, enabling the user to swiftly move through traffic that ordinary emergency vehicles could not.
The customised mountain bikes have been developed since their groundbreaking use by London Ambulance Service which operate in pairs. They have the necessary suspension, gearing and tyres needed for the riders to operate comfortably and safely throughout their duty. Carried in panniers on the bikes are medical gases and giving sets, an AED, the usual minor treatment kits, information leaflets for specific injuries and further advice, neck braces, slings and other vital equipment that would normally be carried by a first response vehicle.
So what are we doing?
Exeter University LINKS is the St John Ambulance (SJA) division that is based on campus and we are fundraising to buy a pair of these fantastic bikes. To raise this money, some of our members have volunteered to undertake a sponsored bike ride from Devon SJA HQ in Exeter to Avon SJA HQ in Bristol, a distance of over 80 miles. Our objective is to raise over £2500 for these bikes and we hope that you are able to help us reach this target by cycling with us or generously sponsoring someone who is.
