Story

What are you afraid of? Spiders? Heights? Public Speaking? People who look different?

We've done this abseil as part of Changing Faces' Face Your Fears campaign, which encourages anyone and everyone to face a personal fear and raise money at the same time (see www.faceyourfears.org.uk for more details). This unique challenge was our chance to face our fear of heights by abseiling 165 foot SAS-style (that is, free-fall), from the Forth Rail Bridge onto the bridge below.

All donations, whether big or small will make a big difference.

So please help today! Donate now.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SPONSORED AND HELPED
Bridge Jumpers Anonymous ABSEIL THE FORTH BRIDGE ON 27TH OCTOBER

It has been a very full weekend and here is a brief update. Please see the photos in the gallery below.

First, on Saturday morning we were at BBC Radio Humberside on a live show for 20 minutes promoting this Abseil and Changing Faces. From the response we have had this was a big success.

This Forth Bridge Abseil experience is an experience that Geoff and Claire do not want to repeat ! They could not get over the mega and massive heights involved and the noise from the trains when going over us as we did it. It was a terrifying time for Geoff and Claire but they did it and Andy breezed the jump freefalling for the first 100 feet!.

It was a sunny morning with little wind when we did it and we raised just over £2k for Changing Faces.  We also had a good crowd supporting us from our family, friends and Changing Faces crowd that was there supporting us all. This was fantastic!  All the supporting crowd at The Abseil on the day made a massive difference in helping us make it happen and getting us through it.

One of the highlights for Team was a member of the public came us to us as we were preparing to leave the car park, handed us £5 and praised us for our efforts. No-one knew this person.

Geoff:

As part of the charity Changing Faces - Face your Fears campaign from 21st October to 27th October I have agreed to do a sponsored abseil off the Forth Bridge in Scotland on 27th October to help raise funds for Changing Faces and dedicate this jump to my Uncle - David Eggleston. This sponsored abseil is part of a great Team from my work (Claire Connor) and scuba diving world (Andrew Haynes) who also want to Face their Fears and raise funds for Changing Faces.
David Eggleston was one of the first presenters for BBC Radio Humberside and was very popular at the time. In 1976 when I was 15 my Uncle David tragically died in a tragic accident when he slipped and fell off the edge of a very high cliff near some waterfalls whilst having his photograph taken.  This has had a dramatic effect on me and I have always feared being near edges where there are massive drops or heights.

Changing Faces are a charity that helps people and families who are living with conditions, marks or scars that affect their appearance. I have a been involved in Changing Faces since the early 90's.

Sponsoring me will achieve 3 things :
1) Raise much needed funds for Changing Face to help those people and families
2) Help me overcome my fear of being at the edge of drop and heights
3) A dedication to my Uncle David

Thank you in advance for your support.

Claire:

I am terrified of heights, I always have been. So when I was asked if I would abseil the Forth Bridge I was very apprehensive. However knowing that it is for such a good cause as Changing Faces and that by doing it I will be supporting a charity that helps people every day, it gives me the chance to conquer my fear. I hope everyone will dig deep and donate generously.

Andy:

When Geoff asked me if I’d like to join him in this challenge, I thought why not, I love a challenge and through this can hopefully make some else’s life less of a challenge, after all – it’s only 165 feet!

We will be supporting Changing Faces by abseiling off the Forth Rail Bridge on the 27th October at 10.52am.

We will be interviewed on BBC Radio Humberside on the Morning Breakfast Show this Saturday between 09:30 & 10:00 you can tune in on 95.9 FM or listen live on the internet at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radiohumberside Listen again becomes available later in the day: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00kgm3l
