Dear friends,
In April 2008 I will be part of a team of 4 skiing to the Geographic North Pole in aid of World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
As Amundsen, André and Byrd did, we will also use Svalbard as our springboard to reach the top of the world. The journey begins in the remote village of Longyearbyen (Svalbard’s capital) on the island of Spitzbergen, well above the Arctic Circle at 78 degrees North. We will then fly to the Russian Ice Station, Borneo, at 89 degrees North (approximately 110km from the North Pole) and strap on our skis and sleds and head off toward our goal - the Geographic North Pole This expedition will involve at least 8 days of unsupported endurance skiing over 110km of shifting pack ice in -25°C to -35°C temperatures. Skiing and pulling our own survival equipment and gear in sleds up to eight hours a day, the challenge is finding a suitable route through the pressure ridges, sastrugi, ice rubbles, and around the leads of open water.
The year 2007-08 also happens to be the fourth International Polar Year (IPY), following those in 1882-3, 1932-3, and 1957-8. IPY is a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic and covers over 200 projects, with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological and social research topics. All the costs of the trip will be funded by myself. Your donation will go directly to WWF. WWF has long known that our entire planet is one delicate and complex set of relationships between species, people, habitats, governments and global market forces. We also know that meaningful conservation cannot take place without focusing on all of them. Your funding will help to tackle this complex issue and raise awarness about the forces that influence and threaten people and nature. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: WWF-UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your support. Farzin
