RMBT 3's Gipping Kipion Cycle · 23 January 2013

When Royal Marines and their families need help, we’re there - with practical, financial, and emotional support for life.

Story

The team have now finished! In just short of 8 days the 9 Marines managed to cycle from the south gate of Faslane to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai averaging just short of 30mph. Mne Ryan Billington and LCpl Cass Clay took the team over the line in front of a supportive group of ship's company and 7 other extremely relieved Royal Marines. The lads are now resting their weary legs before arriving in Dubai for real.

Another massive thank you to everybody who has donated so far, every penny is truly appreciated. Funds continue to roll in on ship as the team conduct some slightly less tiring charity events for the ship's company. Please continue to spread the word to all the lads family and friends about this worthy cause and thanks again!

*UPDATE 30 Jan 1945 Local* Having made good progress through Europe the team have crossed into Asia Minor and are currently in the suburbs of the Turkish capital Ankarra. The good progress has taken its toll however as the team are now struggling to move up and down the ladders on ship and sitting down has never been more painful, despite the modified seat created by LCpl Cass Clay and Mne Steve Caswell. Several Ipods have fallen victim to excessive amounts of sweat making the long night shifts that bit more painful. The current mileage stands at 2634 meaning the team are beyond halfway in terms of distance but with a deteriorating sea state, Dubai is still a long way away. Thanks again to everybody who has donated, the increasing total really does keep us going. More photos to follow!

*UPDATE* The team have now passed through the 750 mile mark and will be hypothetically passing Paris in the next hour. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far, every pound makes getting up in the middle of the night for 80 minutes of cycling that bit easier. Stay tuned for more updates and photos of nine increasingly tired and sore Marines!

Whilst deployed on Op Kipion on board HMS MONMOUTH, Royal Marines Boarding Team 3 are cycling the distance from their home base of Faslane to the Gulf port of Dubai. The team will do so on one bike, mounted on a turbo trainer on the upper deck meaning that once the challenge has begun, there will be a Royal Marine on the bike 24 hours a day until the full distance of 4,825 miles have been covered: this equates to over 500 miles per Marines. All this will be achieved whilst still fulfilling their roles and responsibilities on board.

All funds will be donated to the Royal Marines Charitable Trust fund, a charity very close to the team's hearts. Please give generously and help the lads support their colleagues in need!
