Fin for Finning – Saturday 9 July
Did you know?...
· 100,000,000 sharks are killed for their fins each and every year - astoundingly that equates to 3 sharks dying every time our heart beats!
· the shark fins – which taste of nothing - are then used as a thickening agent for Shark Fin Soup, a Chinese delicacy.
· live sharks are caught, their fins are cut off and the sharks are thrown back. Without their fins the sharks cannot swim, so they suffocate and drown.
· shark finning is driving sharks to the brink of extinction. Without sharks our seas and oceans will be out of balance-many other creatures will die as a result. Even the relationship between the land and the oceans will be affected, which will impact on us all!
· this is happening on our backdoor - a large proportion of the world’s shark fins are actually caught in the Mediterranean.
What are we doing about it?
Submission Dive School are holding a ‘Fin for Finning’ fin-athon on 9 July to:
· raise awareness of the plight of the world’s shark populations.
· dispel some of the myths and negative perceptions many people have about sharks
· raise sponsorship money which will go to the shark charities we support – Project AWARE and the Shark Trust
How will the Fin for Finning fin-athon work?
100,000,000 sharks are killed for their fins each and every year. Linked to this Submission Dive School staff, students and club members are aiming to cover 100,000,000 millimetres (that’s a whopping 100 kilometres!) in our diving fins!!
What can you do to make a difference?
Please give generously in sponsoring anyone you know involved in the Fin for Finning fin-athon. 100 kilometres is a big target, so this will not be an easy paddle in the pool!
All money raised will go to our shark charities; Project AWARE and the Shark Trust. These charities are currently involved in lobbying for legislative changes to the EU fishing policies which enable shark finning in European waters.
