Martha is a 3 year-old little girl who lives in Marple, Stockport. Martha suffers from Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), one of many diseases that affect kidney function. Within 5 years Martha’s kidneys will fail completely. She will then have to go on dialysis, linked up to a machine for several hours a day, three, possibly four, times a week. This is life-limiting enough for an adult but I just can’t imagine what it would be like for a young child. What is more, Martha faces a lifetime on dialysis as, owing to the FSGS, Martha has an important gene missing which means that she only has a 30% chance of a successful transplant. Martha’s Mum, Paula, is desperate to raise funds for Kidney Research UK to back life-saving research into gene therapy, improved transplantation and improved dialysis techniques and, ultimately, to find a cure. Currently, for every single research project that Kidney Research UK funds, the Charity is unable to support four further research proposals that could maybe lead to a cure for kidney disease. We need to raise more funds to increase the level of research into this distressing condition. As Northwest Fundraising Manager for Kidney Research UK, I am helping Paula to launch “Martha’s Campaign”. We have already developed a business plan and schedule of events for the campaign and are determined to raise £ 1million in the first year. Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
