DSN offers peer support to doctors suffering from mental illness, many have financial difficulties. It campaigns to reduce the stigma of mental illness within and outside the medical profession. Doctors' support line is a confidential helpline for doctors in crisis.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. For those of you that don't know me I am a 33yr old psychiatry trainee, have two little boys, two dogs, two cats and a husband! I suffer from severe depressive episodes and have on several occasions been admitted to hospital in the past but fortunately the right combination of medications and a great psychiatric care team have meant that I have been well for some time (some do still feel that I must be unwell due to my decision to run the marathon!).

I am chair of an organisation called The Doctors' Support Network, we are a UKwide charity and currently have approximately 500 members and this is growing rapidly. As a doctor it can be extremely difficult to get confidential psychitaric help and support, doctors are anxious that others may find out as there is still a lot of stigma about mental illness in the medical profession. We offer confidential peer support to these doctors in a variety of ways. Many of the doctors we support are on long term sick leave or have taken ill health retirement often causing financial problems and family stress. We strongly believe that with the right support many of these doctors could continue to work improving their self confidence as well saving the NHS many thousands of pounds.

By donating to DSN you will be contributing to help us provide:

 - an anonymous email forum

- social outings and support meetings

- Doctors Support Line, a helpline offering support for ANY doctor regardless of the problem

- Regular Newsletters

- Expert GMC advice for those going through GMC proceedures on health grounds

- Campaigning to reduce the stigma of mental illness both within and outside the medical profession

- Liaising with the GMC, NCAS and PHP
