Sandblast believes freedom of cultural expression is a fundamental human right. Culture and identity lie at the heart of the Saharawi struggle. Both are threatened by the realities of generations of Saharawis forced to grow up in exile and the repressive policies of the Moroccan occupation in Western Sahara. Sandblast's focus on the arts echos the peaceful and creative way in which the Saharawis express their resistance.
I will be visiting the camps from February 21st to March 3rd to work on a devised theatre piece called 'The Wall.' This piece will reflect the real life stories of the Saharawis and will be brought to a London audience in hope to create greater awareness of their long term struggle. I will be living and working in the camps sharing a tent with a family who is kindly looking after me. In order to do this project, I need to raise £700 for the Saharawi people and Sanblast.
Through The Caravanserai I will also be involved with drama workshops.
Sandblast aims to implement regular cycles of intensive creative workshops in the Saharawi refugee camps in SW Algeria. The main objectives are to:
• strengthen the capacity of Saharawis to express themselves through the arts
• promote freedom of expression
• create platforms to showcase artistic talent.
• enable the refugees to earn an income from artistic activity
