We support people with complex needs to live meaningful and independent lives.

Story

Six enthusiastic, fit and motivated individuals wanted to take part in the Pedal Kart Grand Prix for Sense Scotland.

Unfortunately, none of them could make the date, so into the breach we stepped!

Sense Scotland has been working for over 20 years with children and adults who have communication support needs because of deafblindness, sensory impairment, learning and physical disabilities. One of our key areas of expertise is communication. Working closely with people, often on a one-to-one basis, we aim to find out what their aspirations are and how they want to live their lives

I will upload some more detailed Team Biographies shortly, but for the moment rest assured that you could not find a more innapropriate bunch to stick behind the wheel of any vehicle...

Gillan Cockburn.  He's fast, he's furious, but he's terrified Strathclyde Police might be entering a team...

Dan Chalmers.  He heard there was a Barbeque afterwards.  And Beer.  We've not told him about the karting yet.

Ewen Thomson.  A lean, mean, smoking machine with a horse called Chanel.  Probably our best hope.

Chris Melville.  Our endurance man.  He runs, he coaches, but will this translate well into pedal power?

Dave Mackay.  Psycho-cyclist.  This man can pedal, but how will he cope without his 21 gear racing machine?

Richard McCrea.  The Kart is likely to be more reliable than his old Uno, so he's on to a winner!

We are aiming to raise AT LEAST £1000 for Sense Scotland by 30 May 2010, and when you see what we've signed up for we hope you'll take pity, dig deep and help us blow that target out of the water!

The Pedal Kart Grand Prix will take place at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Fife on Sunday 30 May 2010.  We'll be racing up to 30 other teams in adult sized, pedal powered go-karts around six laps of the full 1.3 mile circuit, as used by the British Touring Car Championship, British Superbikes and the Time Attack Series.

A good laptime on four wheels is in the low 50seconds...

If you've never visited Knockhill, you wont appreciate the elevation changes as you circumnavigate the track - this is no pancake-flat Formula 1 track.  We'll be hurtling downhill through Seat Curves, struggling uphill as we round the John R Weir Chicane, and feeling our legs burn as we round the Real Radio Hairpin and pedal the final stretch back up towards the finish line!
