On 6th November 2009 The Food Bank took over a 2200 sq ft. warehouse in Milton Keynes which will enable us to be confident of holding enough food to meet the growing need in our city and also to expand into other areas such as baby food and toiletries.
Thankfully the warehouse is subsidised by the Milton Keynes Community Foundation, which means we only have to pay 25% of the commercial rental plus service charge and insurance which gives an annual total of £4586. We will also have our general running costs of lighting, heating and water etc so expect our overall costs to be £5586 per annum.
Whilst we have been fortunate to receive funding from many individuals, Churches, businesses and some Parish Council's to cover our initial set-up costs and the first years rental and running costs, we are now keen to raise further funding to ensure we can meet our ongoing annual costs.
In 2007 The Food Bank gave out 1057 food parcels to local people who hit a short term crisis. In 2008 this number more than doubled to 2390. In 2009 the number increased again to 3104 food parcels and with no real sign of the recession easing, we expect 2010 to be another tough year.
The warehouse is essential to ensure we can continue to serve our community so please do sponsor a square foot or two.
