Footprints on the Via Francígena · 16 April 2017

We are the National Deaf Children’s Society, the leading charity for deaf children. We give expert support on childhood deafness, raise awareness and campaign for deaf children’s rights, so they have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Story

My wife Ana Maria and I celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary on April 16th. To mark this we are embarking on a 2000 kms (approx 1300 miles) walk from Canterbury to Rome, along an old pilgrim route, the Via Francígena, hoping to raise £2000 for the National Deaf Children's Society.

We are doing this because the youngest of our three georgeous grandchildren, Magnus, was born with severe hearing loss. He is now 26 months old. Just before his second birthday he received two cochlear implants which have improved his hearing immensely and which are already beginning to transform his life. Many organisations including our much maligned but brilliant NHS have already been very supportive. Going forward it is the National Deaf Children Society (NDCS) who will play a huge role in supporting Magnus.

We hope our efforts will inspire you to help us achieve our goal. We "hearing" people have the ability to remove barriers that prevent deaf people from achieving their dreams. We hope and trust you will help us help NDCS, who in turn will help Magnus achieve his.
