Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I can not thank you all enough for the support you have given to Sophie since her diagnosis.

As you know since her diagnosis, both Sophie and I have been doing different fundraising events to support CLIC-Sargent, they are the leading charity in childhood cancers and have given Sophie and us no end of support.

Sophie and her friends are also working together to raise money through different activities at school and I just know they are going to do amazing.

As you may recall, I stupidly volunteered to join Mick Woods for 50 miles of his mammouth ride, from John O'Groats to Lands End. Mick is cycling for 10 days and for approximately 100 miles a day, to raise money for three charities, one of which is CLIC-Sargent, he will also be cycling for Cancer Research and Activate Sport Foundation, check out Micks Story, I'm sure he would welcome your support http://www.activatesport.co.uk/foundation/events/

I may only be doing 50 miles, but any of you that know me well, will know that this is quite a challenge for me, thankfully I will be joined by 2 friends Sarah Maccleworth and Shane Griffin and the three of us will be raising money for CLIC-Sargent.

I know many of you know Sophie's story. Her journey is far from over and her treatment for Leukaemia is on-going and will be until 25 February 2015:
In the time left Sophie will have:
4 more lumbar punctures - (this is were her spine is injected with Chemotherapy)
11 intravenous doses of Vincristine through the port in her chest
A minimum of 46 blood tests
42 oral doses of Methotrexate Chemotherapy
84 doses of Septrin anti-biotic
323 oral doses of Mercaptopurine Chemotherapy

This doesn't include any unexpected stays in the hospital and unfortunately there will be more.

We campaign to raise money because we want to give something back to the charity that has helped us and so that the 10 children that were told today they have cancer, the 10 children that were told yesterday, the 10 children that will told tomorrow will be guaranteed the support they need.

I can not express enough how much this has effected Sophie's life and ours, by the end of her treatment she will have missed over a year of schooling, she currently manages about 57% of school, but we are incredibly proud of her as her grades are good considering. Unfortunately, although Sophie continues to do well, we recently learnt that part of her treatment has resulted in one of the worst side-effects that we were hoping to avoid, Sophie now has Osteonecrosis in her bone joints, this is a non-reversable condition, this causes pain in her joints.

Believe it or not when I meet other children and their parents, I know that we are lucky. I am always left totally shocked and numbed by some of the stories I hear. I'm not in a position to help these people as I'm dealing with my own fears and emotions.  I can however help through doing what I can to raise awareness and raise money for a very worthy cause. We recently met a delightful 14 year who had to have one of her legs amputated below the knee, how does a 14 year old cope with that, then there is a gorgeous 6 year old who lights up a room when she smiles who has been in hospital none stop since Christmas, she has a hole in her stomach that just won't heal, when I say hole I mean from the inside of her stomach to the outside, it gets infected every time they give her chemotherapy then it bursts, she not able to eat at this point as anything she eats simply comes out of her tummy... I know this is gruesome to read, but it's fact.

So if you could please support me by sponsoring myself, Sarah and Shane on our 50 cycle I would truly appreciate it... 'Every Little Helps', all you need to do is click the link and follow the instructions and don't forget to gift aid if you are a tax payer. Please also share this page with your friends.

Thank you in anticipation of your generosity.
