James McAvoy visits Uganda

In February 2007, Scottish actor James McAvoy visited northern Uganda where he spent four days seeing projects supported by the British Red Cross.

James travelled to camps for internally displaced people, forced to flee their homes during more than 20 years of brutal civil war.

He saw for himself the life- saving work being carried out by the network of Red Cross staff and volunteers. The Last King of Scotland actor was familiar with the country having spent more than three months filming in the country but was horrified by what he saw in the north.

“It’s amazing to think that some of the people I met have been in these camps for five, ten, sometimes even 15 years. The conditions in the camps were awful and it’s horrific to think this has been going on for so long and that so few people actually know about it. The Red Cross is providing essential support to those in the camps and also to those who are starting to return home."

Dearest James,

Being someone who was born and grew up in extreme poverty and without parents, I know what it's like to face the privations of life, its difficulties and challenges, and to mentally mature at a very early age.

Some children find the strength and the persistence to honestly fight and overcome he situation, however, the vast majority does not, getting lost in the bottom of life without even being noticed... And some of them, having the opportunity, could've become the nowaday's Newtons and Einsteins, Mozarts and Beethovens.

My only and sacred request from You is to keep helping the children in need. They did nothing to deserve the dark destiny...

And of course, You can always count on us, the people who think like You do...
