Flora London Marathon 2008 · 13 April 2008 ·

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease that only occurs in women. It affects just over one woman in a million. We are a self-help group providing support for patients with LAM and raise money for vital research - it is often difficult to obtain money for research into a rare disease.

Story

Back in October last year a young lad, Woz, at my kickboxing club asked if I would run the London Marathon for LAM Action as his aunt had recently died of this awful disease.  I tried and failed as they had no places left.  Earlier this week I was contacted by LAM Action and asked to step in as one of their runners had become injured.  So, here I am, needing sponsorship and proud to be running on behalf of Woz, in memory of his aunt, who at 13 is too young to run himself.

Here's a few words from Woz about his Aunt:-

Amanda Burgess, born 8th January 1962, died 1st September 2007.  Mother of five children-Hailey (23), Lauren (17), Jordan (14), Connor (11) and Ryan (6).

When Mandy died, daughter Hailey adopted Lauren and Ryan.  Jordan and Connor went to live with their father, Neil.  The kids all see each other every other day but obviously it's not the same without their mother.

Amanda was told in August 2006 that if the right match for a heart and lung transplant wasn't found within a year that she would die!  Amanda had four brothers-Gary (Woz's dad), Lee, Dean and David.  So all through the experience she had a lot of support.  On 29th August 2007 Amanda's family (daughters, sons, mother June who never left her side, brothers) were contact to say she had been rushed to hospital in Epsom, she'd fallen out of bed, everyone thought that was the end but Amanda proved them wrong and struggled on for another 3 days.  She eventually passed away at 2:30am on 1st September 2007.

Amanda was allso Godmother of Perry Burgess (brother Gary's son).  Perry was distraught as she wasn't just his auntie, she was his friend.

Amanda had a good ceremony with lots of family and friends.  She requested to be cremated so she got her request and her ashes sit in her living room today.
