The Cheshire Ring Canal Bike Ride For Harley (1st)

Friday 11th September + Saturday 12th September 2009

SO, WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

This is a 100 mile+ ride along the canal tow paths that follows the canal in a circle around Cheshire.

The Cheshire ring is made up of 6 canals >>

Peak Forest canal, Ashton canal, Rochdale canal, Bridgewater canal, Trent & Mersey canal and Macclesfield canal.

We'll pass through loads of towns and see plenty of sites too. (Not to mention lots of water and canal locks).

It's a 2 day trip for the team that are taking part on the first of this event, starting at Romiley Forum (SK6 4EA), at 7 or 8am on the Friday morning,

We will be going anti-clock  wise from our starting point of Romiley through to Woodley >> Hyde >> Ashton >> Droylsden >> Openshaw >> Beswick >> Piccadilly >> Canal Street >> Castle Field (KEY103)>> Salford >> Old Trafford football ground >> Stretford >> Sale >> Timperley >> Altrincham >> Dunham >> Lymm >> Thelwall >> Grappenhall >> Stockton Heath >> Walton >>Moore >> Anderton >> Northwich >> Marston >

> MIDDLEWICH <<

This where we will stop for the night at the Boars Head Hotel that's near the canal.(THANKS Liz).

Once we've had breakfast we will head off again and move on to

Sandbach >> Wheelock >> Alsager >> Kidsgrove >> Staffordshire >> Biddulph >> Congleton >> Macclesfield >> Bollington >> Poynton >> Marple and back to Romiley.

We will return on the Saturday afternoon and will join a fundraising FUN DAY event at THE FRIENDSHIP PUB IN ROMILEY, where we shall sup and get some food inside us.

The terrain will not be smooth all the way and we won’t be able to pick up much speed most of the time either,
this time we're going to pace ourselves and plan to do it over the 2 days, (we may be side tracked into pubs we maybe obliged to stop at on the way..lol.. they average 1 per mile, but with time permitting may not have the chance).

WHY?? >> Were supporting and raising funds to help 4 year old Harley Slack who was struck down with meningitis B (Meningococcal septicaemia). As a result of this both of Harley's arms and legs were amputated in order to save his life, during his ordeal he was resuscitated 3 separate times. He is now being cared for at the new Royal Manchester Children's hospital.

JOB DONE !!!

Here's how we got on. (It wasn't easy)

Our sponsored ride went well and is on it's way to raising £800 for Harley. (Key103's cash for kids / help Harley).

We set off from Romiley at 7.20am on the Friday morning of 11th September as planned.
The weather was great for both the Friday and Saturday.
The ride was not as easy as most had thought and pushed us all.
The ride made all 5 of us appreciate the country side and all enjoyed it as the people along the canal were so friendly.

The boars head where we stayed over at in middlewich was great for us as it's only a short distance from the canal and were glad of a comfy bed and a fantastic breakfast.
We had a nice evening meal next door to the boars head at a place called "Kinderton House Hotel, bar and restaurant".
I'd like to say a big thank you to Liz and all her staff at for making our passing visit excellent.

We thankfully arrived back in Romiley at the friendship inn funday around 5.30pm on the Saturday.
All in all we clocked up around 110 miles each as the ride wasn't with out it's problems and numerous punctures etc.

I'll be organising this ride over 2 days again some time next year and hopefully make it an annual event for people.
At some point aiming to do the Cheshire Ring Canal Bike Ride circuit in less than a day.
