Story
Dr Andre R Simon, MD PhD
Director of Transplantation and Consultant Cardiac Surgeon
It has been a dream of mine to take a group of our transplant patients, and show the world what can be achieved after a life-saving transplant. In doing so, we will raise the bar of expectation and generate significant awareness of organ donation.
I am delighted to say, that the time has now come. This June, we will take 20 heart and /or lung transplant patients on an expedition to Cotopaxi in Ecuador.
Cotopaxi, is one of the world's highest active volcanos, at 5,897m, and is a much sought after prize for mountaineers - and we believe will be the highest ever climb by a lung transplant patient, and definitely by a group of transplant patients - the majority of whom have never climbed at all before!
It will be an amazing feat for each of them to do this, to come from the brink of near death, to the top of the world - and to see the excitement and belief in their eyes when I talk about it with them means that we must achieve this.
The team have now completed an introductory climb in Glencoe Scotland in March. The expedition itself departs the UK on the 26th June 2015, and we return on 12th July 2015.
Thank you for your kind and generous support.
