Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My dad died on 4 November 2009 from motor neurone disease.  It all happened so quickly he was told on 4 November 2008 that he had MND exactly one year to the day he died.  There was no indication other than he had a fall in the October and we thought he had had a mini stroke but after various tests it turned out to be MND.

MND attacks the nerve cells (motor neurones) that send messages from the brain to the muscles.  As these motor neurones gradually die, the muscles stop working.  MND destroyed my dad's ability to walk, talk, dress and towards the end swallow.  Few disorders are as devastating as MND.  Imagine a healthy and alert mind trapped inside a body that can't move, but can still think and feel.  That's the devastating reality of MND.

My dad during his illness touched the hearts of many people with his positive attitude and adorable personality.  The nurses and other care professionals loved being with him and no matter how bad he may of been feeling he always managed to have a smile on his face.  He amazed all of us and without the help of the MND Association things could have been much harder.  The MND Association provide care and support to people with MND and their families and carers enabling them to achieve the highest quality of life possible.  My mum was my dad's main carer the MND Association was a great support to her.

On 19th September I will be running the great north run which is 13 miles from Newcastle to South Sheilds to raise awareness of the disease and funds for the association.  Every penny counts so no matter how small I know they will be so grateful.
