Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
I ran the London Marathon on April 26th and this Bank Holiday weekend its the BIG ONE. The Wessex 100 mile ultra-marathon. http://www.wessex100.org.uk/index.html. It's a non-stop endurance event with over 3000m of ascent so it will test the mind as well as the body. Can't wait !! Although it is my 3rd Hundred they certainly don't get any easier.
Yes I've been told I'm as "mad as a box of badgers" (popular west country saying) but it keeps me off the streets and gives me a focus. Something the Avenues Youth Project knows all about - focus that is, not badgers!
Jackie Rosenberg and her team do a fantastic job helping young people to develop their self esteem, enhance their employment opportunities and challenge their attitudes
The Avenues Youth Project was established in 1979. It is based in the Queen's Park ward of Westminster, one of the most deprived areas of London.
• Unemployment rates are high (40%+ for young black men) and educational achievement is well below the national average.
• The Avenues offers an alternative to social exclusion for young people in the area.
• The Avenues Youth Project is open to anyone between the ages of 11 and 23. Over half of the users are in the core age range of 13 to 18 and over 90% are black.
Over the past twenty years thousands of young people have passed through The Avenues Youth Project. Many came from difficult backgrounds and have gone on to college and to take up jobs, developing into confident and mature members of society. It is a testament to the role that The Avenues Youth Project has played in the lives of many of the members that they have remained in contact and that some have returned as volunteers and as members of staff.
• Links are being developed and furthered not only with the local community but also with other agencies to ensure that when the New Avenues is built it will be able to offer the widest possible choice of opportunities.
• The new, bigger and better, Avenues Youth Project will be to the advantage of everybody, not just current members and will become a focus for the younger people in the community
"I've been at the Avenues since I was 12 and I know that coming to the club helped me to keep off the streets and give me a focus. Over the years the club has given me the opportunity to get involved in a number of music projects such as performing at the French music festival, as well as to travel and perform in a number of countries with people from different cultures. I could never have done any of this without the Avenues' support."
