THE SSC SAINTS MALAWI HDU CHALLENGE aims to give a group of young people the challenge and opportunity of a lifetime, to make a difference to a lot of people in Malawi and to make lifelong friendships along the way. This is to be a reciprocal programme that we hope to continue each year with a group from Scotland going to Malawi every second year and a group from Malawi coming to Scotland on the other year.

The trip is totally independent and is run by SSC volunteers. This trip will make a significant impact on those in need in Malawi, as well as all the young people we are working with in Malawi. The F.R.O.M. Scotland fund-raising if for the High Dependency Unit (the SSC will donate the money raised to this charity). The reason we are fundraising for an HDU is that there are patients in the hospital that require intensive monitoring of their condition as they are so sick. This might be because they have had an operation, had a traumatic delivery of a baby or severe malaria. These patients need a lot of extra nursing care and monitoring and this cannot be done on a normal ward. A nurse on the ordinary ward might look after 30 patients with 3 other nurses a nurse in the HDU would look after only two patients - this tells you how sick the patients are. The hospital only has big wards and no facilities to look after patients who are suffering from life threatening diseases, without the HDU people will continue to die from illnesses that with the right care, attention and facilities they could survive. As well as fund-raising to pay for the HDU we will be involved in its construction when we go out this summer.

We are working in partnership with SAINTS (St Andrews International School) in Malawi, Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council, FROM Scotland (Famine Relief Orphans Malawi), Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Western General Edinburgh and Chikwawa Hospital in South West Malawi where the HDU will be built.

Many thanks for your donation.
