Homelessness is on the rise in London and there are recent figures published by the charity organisation Shelter and a newspaper article (see below) which give further details.

I am doing this bike ride to raise funds on behalf of the global organisation called 'Who is Hussain'. This organisation has been feeding over 100 homeless people every Saturday outside Charing Cross for the last 2 years. They also have CV workshop days and where possible, provide free grooming (see below)

There are over 100 people taking part in this bike ride. The aim is to raise funds for mobile showers which can be utilised by the homeless in London.

The following has been taken from the 'Who is Hussain' website:

Who is Hussain is a global organisation dedicated to letting the world know about an inspirational man  who lived fourteen-hundred years ago. A man called Hussain.

We aim to inspire people through the timeless example of Hussain and bring positive change in the world we live in. Our reps and volunteers organise events to give back in their local communities, ranging from blood donation drives to feeding the homeless and much more.

In 2012 we were a group of youth from across different communities in London. Collectively we were inspired by Hussain ibn Ali, and through his example we were inspired to help contribute and develop the world around us. We found that the world we lived in over-emphasized personal need above common humanity. Our shared sense of compassion was heavily eroded. To solve this we wanted to share our inspiration with everyone else.

We wanted Hussain ibn Ali to be a role-model for all, regardless of gender, class, religion, creed or any other superficial factor that divides our common humanity. Hussain cared more for shared human understandings than for titles and names that divide us. It is for that reason we emphasise that we are apolitical, areligious and a-everything else that should divide us from one another!

On a more personal note; somebody very close to me was once homeless. He picked apples from trees, cigarette ends from the streets, waited around sandwich bars/cafes for food to be thrown out, and encountered many more horrific things. He was not an alcoholic and never did he ask anyone for money. He is off the streets now. There are many homeless people like him in London and we can collectively work together to help them get back on their feet :)
