Story

MAY 2020 UPDATE :

The goal with this event has always been to raise awareness of male suicide and hopefully some much needed funds for CALM at the same time. Combined with that is the hope that we as a community of runners can come together to show how supportive we are.

Nothing has changed in that regard and if anything, now more than ever, we need to stand together and be there for those who may not be in a good place.

On that basis and after much contemplation & consultation the event will go ahead! BUT it cannot stay the same. Everyone needs to stay safe and follow the government guidelines.

SO! 24in2020 “The Run for CALM” is now a virtual event. What I am asking is any and all runners to go out and run between 7am May 30th and 7am May 31st. Run locally, run safely and run as far as you like! When you get back share your run on social media with the hashtag #RUNFORCALM along with the JustGiving link.

In this way I hope we can still come together as a community to raise awareness of male suicide. I hope this event gives you a purpose to run for on the day and a sense of combined effort to help others.

What will I be doing while you all log your miles and share your runs? Well, I will be running for 24 hours, I said I would and I intend to stand by that.

I will be running a figure of eight 10k loop starting and finishing on my own driveway. I will be using my own home as the base for the event so no shared facilities. In line with government guidance I will have only one pacer at any time who will stay 2 metres from me.

I believe this cause is so important and I hope the new version of the event still brings us all together in a way that many of us will sorely need right now.

There will be more communications as the day approaches but it would be great to get some comments below if you can take part!

FINALLY, ONE BIG ASK – please can you all share this post? It would be amazing to make this even bigger than the original plan!

All the best and stay safe

Andy

The goal of this challenge and having fellow runners with me at every point throughout the 24 hours, is to highlight what a supportive community runners are. Also to demonstrate that no matter what, you are never alone.

So why did I choose CALM? And who are they?

CALM is a leading movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. Their goal is a life less miserable for you, your friends, your family and for all men.

CALM provides –

A free and anonymous helpline 0800 58 58 58 and web chat (5pm-12am daily) staffed by trained professionals.

Bereavement support - A website www.theCALMzone.net with inspiring content by men for men

Campaigns tackling stereotypes of masculinity, suicide and male mental health.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at the page, if you feel able to donate it will be greatly received. If you would like to take part in the running with me on the day or just come along to support then please have a look at the website
