Story
Our amazing Mum was taken by cancer on the 17th October - "an aggressive brain tumour" they said, "go home and make memories" they said - her battle seemed so short, but we wonder now how long she'd just coped, as Mum always did, in her own style. We've been blessed to have learnt from her courage and dignity, experienced her humour and benefited from her generosity and kindness, but our hearts have been left with a big chunk missing. They said "go make memories" and we did, thanks in part to our wonderful family and friends, but also by the amazing Macmillan Cancer Team, for which we are eternally grateful.
You don't ever fully appreciate what they do until you need them. From the literature given to you by your Oncologist with the Macmillan Help Line on - to that Help Line being answered by someone whose final words are "you're not alone" and you honestly then feel like you're not - to being given your own Nurse, who makes your Mum feel like she's the only patient she is caring for in the whole world, never rushes, always rings back, is always on time, does what she says she's going to do - this was our Claire, our amazing Macmillan nurse Claire.
I vowed I would never ever run another marathon, but if running this raises enough money to have that person at the end of the phone, gives another patient another Claire, that helps families with counselling and financial support, pays for someone to make you feel like you're not on your own, then it's worth every single mile of training. The blisters, the sore feet, the tears are nothing in comparison to seeing a cancer patient smile when their nurse sits by their bed, when your family member cries and is held by that nurse and counselling is sorted, when the training of that nurse enables them to sense things that you don't even know they can see or even understand.
Macmillan made a massive difference to our Mum, please help me raise money so someone else can benefit too.
My wonderful husband, Dad, sisters, children and close friends are supporting throughout my training journey and are helping with fundraising, so this is a massive team effort - thank you so much xx
