Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In 2012 Bernie was diagnosed with a large brain aneurysm, she was transferred to St Georges and under the care of the Neuro radiology team. Her aneurysm was coiled a short stay in ICU and sent home, a review some weeks later and the aneurysm had grown bigger..... some more coiling and away for a review. the new year came and an angiogram showed that it had extended again and become a dangerous disecting aneurysm. during this surgery it ruptured, Bernie incurred a brain heamorrage and heamoragic stroke, she was rushed round to neuro surgery where they opened her head for a drain to be installed.

This left Bernie with a left hemiplegia (impaired left arm and leg), left hemianopia (loss of vision on left side) and poor sensation through her left side. months of rehab and Bernie was discharged home, her mobility compromised but not her spirit. months passed by and we looked into how we were going to get Bernie back on a bike, we tried a mountain bike tandem, but her shoulder and stability meant she was in too much pain and we managed only 2 miles at a time. this year -2016-  we found a semi-recumbent tandem, our first ride 10miles 2nd was 18miles and now we are doing excess of 50 miles on a training day.

Not one day has Bernie ever said why me! she looks forward, never back and enjoys every ride on the tandem, this wouldn't have been possible without the professional care at St Georges Neuro teams, they gave Bernie and us as a family such support we are forever in their debt. we decided that giving back to those that helped us that would be amazing as we never anticipated this ever happening as Bernie was a fit elite level cyclist prior to her diagnosis. meaning that this could happen to anyone... therefore it is essential that these facilities and staff are well funded as there service is so valuable. We feel this is the only and best way to say thank you... not only for what they have done for us but for those they will help in the future... you just never know!!!!

Our challenge is the dragon tour, approx. 100km on Friday 97km on Saturday and 157km on Sunday. this is around the Gower Peninsula and the Brecon beacons (Hilly!!!) this is a challenge for anyone let alone someone who is disabled, we would be so grateful for any donation it really is a great cause...
