Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. In 2008 my husband Clive died from lung cancer. He had been in Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice for only a short time but the care he received during the last few days of his life will impact me forever.  I’ll always remember when visiting Clive walking down the corridor when one of the nurses came up  put her arm round me and said ‘do you want to talk?’ We went and found a quiet spot and talked. She was the first person to tell me Clive could die any day. I really appreciated that honesty.

Clive wanted to be at home in the end and the team at Wheatfields did everything they could to get him there, from organising the bed
to the transport.  As we left to get in the ambulance that was taking us home the nurses lined up to say goodbye to him. Where else would you get that?  We got him home where he was able to see his beloved garden one last time. He died the next day.

After his death I was encouraged to set up the Clive Piper Tribute fund through which all the monies raised through my charity events are
channelled, and equally important, it helps me keep his memory alive. The ‘Dive for Clive’ a tandem skydive that I organise and take part in is now in its sixth year. After organising various events from garden parties to walking on hot coals I decided that 2017 would be a special year.

In 2017 I launched my ‘Big 70 Challenge’. In June I took part in a Wingwalk at Breighton Aerodrome, and in August I abseiled down the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a 114.5-metre-high sculpture in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. The final leg was to be a 5-day trek in the Grand Canyon, but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to take part.

Committed to completing my Challenge, I am returning to Breighton Aerodome in June, this time taking part in an Aerobatic Wingwalk which includes looping the loop.

Why do I feel the need to do this at 71 years of age?

First and foremost, to raise as much money as I can to help the dedicated staff at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice to continue to provide the amazing care and support they gave to my late husband Clive and myself ten years ago during our hour of need.Secondly, this is my fifth year in remission from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, a condition I was told I would never get rid of. So I have a two-fold reason for wanting to complete what I set out to do twelve months ago.

 MAD?= Possibly                 COMMITTED? =100%
