John was a kind, generous and loving man. His support for local charities and voluntary organisations was not something he talked about but was something he did quietly - and frequently. HIs love for his wife, children, stepchildren and grandchildren was constantly evident in both his words and deeds.
He had an astonishing strength of character that demonstrated itself in so many ways. He forged links within the butchery and small abattoirs industry when others said it couldn't be done. He gave so many a second chance when others would have turned their backs and walked away. He was loyal. He never, ever gave up on those he loved; once he loved someone, he loved them for life - and beyond!
Following the sale of his business and his retirement, when he had planned to travel the world, the Covid pandemic struck placing all of us into lockdown. It was during this time that we learned that John had a very aggressive form of prostate cancer with a remaining lifespan of around 5 years.
By March 2021, we were informed that he probably had no more than 3 years left and then, just a few weeks later, we were told that his cancer was so aggressive he would be unlikely to survive the next 6 months. The very next day we were told that it was probably closer to 3 months. From that point, he lived for just 3 more weeks.
John took all of this in his stride. Despite the fact he was in excruciating pain, he was incredibly brave. Indeed, his concern was mainly for me, his wife, and my welfare. He never wallowed in self pity but instead focussed on what he could achieve in the short time he had left. This lack of self pity and unselfishness was truly awe inspiring and yet heartbreaking to witness.
He was incredibly appreciative of the staff at St Catherine's hospice who made him feel as comfortable as was humanly possible in his final two weeks of life and I promised him that I would do whatever I could to ensure that the hospice be rewarded and recompensed for the loving care that they had provided to him.
It was his wish that this JustGiving page be set up to support St Catherine's Hospice so please make a donation because every donation, however small, funds the help the hospice can provide to others.
