Great North Run 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·

Diabetes UK is the charity leading the fight against the UK's devastating and fastest growing health crisis, working to create a world where diabetes can do no harm. It’s a fight that involves all of us – sharing knowledge and taking diabetes on together. Join us.

Story

I am running the Great North Run with My Husband to raise money for Diabetes UK. In May 2019 aged 25 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, meaning that I have to now inject myself daily with insulin. My diagnosis was delayed due to it being mistaken for OCD and anxiety. When I got rushed into hospital I didn’t know what to think and it was a huge shock and an incredibly hard time for me. I wanted to give up on most things as I thought since I am now Diabetic I probably won't be "allowed" to live a normal life... which certainly is not the case!

Once I got over the initial shock I started running again to try and keep as fit and healthy as possible and now here I am preparing to run a half marathon which I have never done before! Running this will be a huge personal achievement for me and I am very much looking forward to proving that Diabetes doesn’t have to take over your life!  This is to prove to myself that I can do anything that I want to do and Diabetes won't stand in the way of it! Diabetes doesn't just affect the person who has it, it also affects their loved ones too! As a Parent of 2 Young Boys my main priority is to keep as fit and healthy as I possibly can for them and for them to be proud of their Mummy.

My Husband will be running with me… if he can keep up with me!  www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kevin-mcgreal
