Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The charity is unique within Scotland and is operated and registered by the Beatson Oncology Unit in Glasgow, it was set up in June 2009.  We are only a small family charity, but with our fundraising we have supported 42 couples up to September 2017 to marry during this time.

Joan took ill at the beginning of April with a chest infection, the doctors realised after three weeks and various tests Joan had cancer in her lung, pancreas and her right leg.  Joan was given two weeks to live and although my son Charles and Joan had been together for nine years they had never married there was always another day but now those days were gone.  They wished to marry before Joan died, it was what they had wanted to do on some date and also to give Joan's son security leaving Charles as his guardian.  They were married within 24 hours thanks to the wonderful staff at the Beatson Oncology Unit and family gathering round to pay for the emergency wedding licence, dress, flowers, cake, rings and other things to make the day.  Joan went into a coma two days later and died within a week.

We want to ensure that anyone in this dreadout  position does not have to go without getting married at this time solely due to lack of funds.  These couples really know the meaning of their wedding vows when they say "till death us do part".

The couples are given a minimum of £1,000 and we also have a group of business supporters who provide free of charge rings, cakes, flowers, dress hire, buffet, hair, nails, make up, photography, minister, humanist service, wedding chapel, cake, flowers, invitations and kilt hire  this also gives any children within the partnership the security they require.  We do not operate the funds, this is undertaken by the Beatson Unit, they decide who is in the position to be helped by the fund and because of confidentiality. The family pay for the operational costs of the fund, every penny raised goes into the fund.
