Cycle Australia for leprosy · 26 May 2017
Hi,
I'm Mike and I love cycling, so at the age of 78 I’m going to
get on my beloved bike and cycle from Alice Springs to Darwin in Northern Australia to raise money for The Leprosy Mission. To learn more about leprosy, go to the link leprosymission.org.uk .
I’ll set off in August 2017
and cycle 1500 km in about five weeks.
I'll be unsupported - just me, my bike and my tent.
Why am I raising money for The Leprosy Mission?
During my four years working as a biomedical scientist in
Myanmar on humanitarian projects including HIV, TB, and malaria, a group affected by leprosy in the forests of Mon State came to my notice.
They're in desperate need of support, and like so many other people in the world today, they're destitute, ostracized and stigmatized. Although a great deal is being done by a dedicated group to alleviate their problems,
much more is needed.
Affected by one of the world’s forgotten diseases, their plight goes largely unnoticed despite the fact that there are about 4 million cases ongoing and 600 new ones daily.
The old attitude that it is a disease for life is untrue.
LEPROSY IS TOTALLY CURABLE, but if left untreated it leads to disfiguring, debilitating and life threatening conditions. It’s also the cause of social exclusion as it’s difficult to be accepted in the local community and the
classroom.
