Eleven years ago I cycled with a group of 9 friends from John O'Groats to Lands End (Google our blog entitled -'One Million Potholes from Lands' End - 28 June 2011). On 31 May 2022 I'll set out with the remnants of the same group, namely Les Appleby, Gary Richards and Simon Taylor  to cycle the 1000 or so miles in the opposite direction with Dave Basham joining us part way en route.  "Why do it again?" you ask. Well, in October 2016 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer during a BUPA health check and was referred to a specialist for observation and subsequent biopsies. From the various treatments offered, I decided to have a nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy which was successfully carried at  University College Hospital London in July 2018. I was very relieved to be told during the follow-up consultation that the cancer was contained and hadn't spread elsewhere. Since my diagnosis I've been aware of several men who have not been as fortunate as I. They have a reduced life expectancy or, in the case of an old school pal, very sadly succumbed to this very common yet still overlooked disease which is just as deadly as breast cancer is in women yet gets no regular screening programme.  Now at the age of 75, it's going to be a much harder challenge, but I'm so grateful for the care and support I received following my diagnosis that I want to draw as much attention to this killer disease to encourage all men to be regularly tested.
