Story
Back in 2015, Paul Hughes decided he wanted to raise as much
money as possible for charity. His charity of choice at the time was Cancer Research. Cancer had made such a huge impact on Pauls life, his grandfather passed away from cancer and his mother-n-law and close friend, Peter Hughes were also fighting the disease. Paul felt that he needed to help this worthwhile cause, so with help from his family and friends including Peter Hughes he set up a football match, Salford Boys vs Winsford Saxons in February 2015. The teams were made up of local lads from both teams, with Paul and Peter being the
player managers. The day was a huge success, with money being donated by the players and supporters, a total of £1400 was raised.
After the success of this event, Paul decided that he wanted to carry on and another two football matches have since happened, one in August
2015 and then in May 2016, with the money being donated to other charities that have had an impact on Paul's life. Each event has got bigger and better since the last one and both of these raised around £2000 each. To help raise money, Paul got local and national businesses to donate prizes that were raffled off and with the last event got professional boxer, Jamie Moore to make an appearance.
With this now becoming an annual event, Paul wanted to make sure that this year’s event made as much money as possible and so has got the celebrities involved! Paul approached the charity Once Upon a Smile and asked whether their celebrity team would be interested in playing a football match and in return the money raised would go to their charity and they agreed!
With the celebrities now on board, and a fantastic venue, FC United secured, the 4th charity fundraiser, Salford Saxons vs The Once Upon a Smile Celebs has been set for Saturday 10th June. Kick of 3pm with the after party and trophy presentation from 6pm.
