Cycling Souillac to Nice (500+ miles!) · 20 March 2022

Motor Neurone Disease moves fast. It takes away time, it takes away independence and it has no cure. Every day we support people affected by MND. We fund ground-breaking research. We campaign for better care. We’re here for everyone who needs us. Because with MND, every day matters.

Story

Starting with a lovely story (from Rachel's Page):

"In 2016, Ildiko and I set off on a 4 week challenge: to cycle 1000 miles across France, from St Malo to Nice. We planned to do this is one-week chunks. The first year we took a ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo, cycling off the ferry to begin our adventure. The next year we picked up where we had left off for our next leg, from Samur to Souillac. We had a break the next 2 years and then covid arrived and her MND diagnosis. Beautiful, larger than life, Ildiko passed away last year leaving a big hole in many people's lives. In my last conversation with her, we laughed and gossiped, her in a wheelchair, me on video at home. And I made her a promise: I would finish the cycle ride, both of us knowing but not saying out loud what we both knew. I told this story to Andy, who sadly never got the chance to meet Ildy. But immediately he said: when are we going to do it? Shortly after, we decided that it would be as soon as possible, because none of us know what's around the corner, and because I regret not doing leg 3 the following year, and because life is unexpected and time is short, no matter how long it turns out to be. So, in April we will complete the trip for Ildy and to raise money for the motor neurone disease association."

What a wonderful opportunity to finish off this adventure; and an honour to be able to do it in memory of Ildiko! Looking forward to more lovely stories of her on the way round!
