Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As many of you reading this will know I lost my beautiful and unbelievably brave Mum to cancer last January. She was my absolute rock and always made an impact on those she met. Forthright and honest she never held back but was always kind and fun loving. She was active and healthy so it came as a real shock when we heard that she had been diagnosed with bowel cancer, but also that it had already spread to her liver. We knew it would be a battle but nothing could prepare us for just how hard it would be. Mum had one very major operation and numerous courses of chemotherapy over two years. During this time she became very weak at times and was in a massive amount of pain, and when the suggestion was made that she could go into a hospice to manage her symptoms and help to build her back up to continue treatment I remember her being reluctant. This was due to the association of hospices with end of life care, but once she decided that the care they were offering could actually assist in her battle, St Richards Hospice became the one place that felt really comforting for her to be. Mum spent a number of months there on and off over the last year of her life and it is no exaggeration to say that it is a truly inspirational place to be. The care that they provide and the dignity that they treat their patients with is second to none. I simply cannot believe that a facility like St Richards operates almost entirely on donations and volunteers alone. At one time prior to her diagnosis Mum actually spent a day a week volunteering in the day centre at St Richards. I would love to raise as much money as I possibly can to repay them in a small way in my Mums memory, but also to help ensure that they can continue to provide the care and support to others.

My mission is simple...to dress up as a snail (with full shell and eyes on tentacles) to undertake an epic ride from the very top of the country to the very bottom of the country on a 1989 Honda C90 Cub motorbike. I'm expecting many challenges along the way - weather, breakdowns/roadside repairs, not to mention earache and and very sore buttocks! One thing that is certain though is that it will be SLOW progress!! The Cub is many things but fast it is not...think 45mph on a downhill with the wind behind me! The 975 mile adventure will hopefully be completed in a week (fingers crossed). I will update you on my progress, but in the meantime I would be massively grateful for your sponsorship...no matter how small the amount. Lets raise some money!!!
