Story
In the long, hot summer of 2013, I completed a solo 955 mile walk from John O'Groats to Land's End (JOGLE) as a personal challenge and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. This led to me writing a book about my epic journey, 'Footsteps in Summer', and to giving illustrated talks to a wide range of groups and clubs. So far, I've raised over £30,000 for this worthy cause, but the time has come for me to undertake another walking challenge.
My original plan was to walk around Wales in the summer of 2020 but, with my route planned and accommodation fully booked, COVID-19 landed in the UK and obliterated any prospect of my journey taking place. By 2021, COVID was receding, but there was still uncertainty around the end of lockdown restrictions in Wales, so I reluctantly postponed the walk to 2022. However, much to my disappointment, most of the accommodation I'd booked for 2020 was already fully booked for the entire summer of 2022. I would have to wait for another year!
My journey will now take place in the summer of 2023 (which will hopefully be dry, but not as hot as 2013!). Starting on 14th May, I'll be following the entire Wales Coast path anticlockwise from Chester to Chepstow, then joining Offa's Dyke path to Prestatyn to complete the round trip on 15th July - a total distance of over 1,050 miles. My accommodation is fully booked! It will be tough going and I have to remind myself that it will be ten years since I completed my previous JOGLE adventure. I'm older, possibly wiser, but definitely not as fit!
Anybody is welcome to join me on the walk, whether for a few hours or days on foot, or by meeting up in the evening for a bite to eat (perhaps to buy me a recuperative beer!). Just let me know and I will forward my itinerary.
Please support me by making a donation to Cancer Research UK. Their valuable work has helped to significantly increase survival rates from cancer during my lifetime, yet with no government funding, they rely entirely on our donations.
Many thanks for your continued support.
