Baby Respirators · 23 April 2020

First Touch supports sick and premature babies cared for at St George’s neonatal unit in SW London. We fund state-of-the-art equipment and specialist staff training which are outside of the scope of NHS budgets, as well as a range of initiatives to support families during their stay on the unit.

Story

THANK YOU! to all our fantastic supporters, near and far, for your support of St George's neonatal intensive care unit. Your generosity has funded one new baby respirator (£8,000) and 150 high-spec washable masks to be used by parents visiting their babies (£661). This has made a big difference to the unit and we are very grateful for your support at this difficult time for everyone.

If you would still like to donate, please do! There are so many more things needed by St George’s NICU and its patients (including essential but costly breast pumps, weighing scales, etc. none of which can now be shared due to Covid.) - please go to www.justgiving.com/matthew

All donations will be directed immediately to the purchase of equipment to help premature and sick babies and their families at St. George's.

Update: In addition to the new respirator we want to help parents of hospitalised babies to visit them as often and as safely as possible during Covid. As part of this each of them needs to receive a fresh high-spec face-mask each time they enter the NICU.

Appeal: The neonatal unit of St George's NHS Hospital needs help to fund a baby respirator. During this challenging time babies continue to be born, with some needing days... weeks... even months of treatment at the NICU before they can go home. Premature babies' lungs are underdeveloped and the biggest issue faced by almost all of them is simply breathing enough oxygen.

Many of the unit's ventilators have been seconded for use elsewhere in the hospital during the Covid-19 crisis. There is an urgent need for high-flow respiratory support devices for the NICU babies. Respirators are less invasive than ventilators so less likely to cause lung injury.

A huge THANK YOU from St George’s Hospital NICU - outstanding team pictured above - for all donations, large and small.

Every year St George’s neonatal unit cares for 600+ sick/premature babies from across the country, saving lives and improving outcomes. First Touch is the unit’s dedicated charity, reg.no.1072500. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on. Your donation will be sent directly to the charity.
