3.6 Challenges · 24 June 2020

UWS works to ensure children have access to quality, inclusive education in remote and marginalised communities by collaborating with local partners, communities and governments. We deliver schools, we train teachers and we strengthen education systems.

Story

The head of UWS in Cambodia often talks to our students about the importance that a school plays within the community.  La Muey school is the village play-ground, it is the social hub and it is where villagers come to collect clean water and sometimes go to the loo. The 3.6 challenges and our fundraising day at school provide us with an opportunity make sure Bak Kae and La Muey have the necessary funding for next year.  So, if you can complete a challenge and raise a few Euros. 36 Euros supports a child in school for a year.

Junior School teacher Jo Zivanovic is one of the people who has taken up the challenge by cycling from the edge of Paris to Mont St Michel – look at a map it’s a long way. Jo and her team completed the challenge on 15th July.

"La Muey school represents so much of what’s right with the world in
these times of desperation, as it shows the wonders that generosity, hard work and education can have on a small community. These girls’ stories, and now determination to give back to their community, inspire me to do more not only in the community around me, but in the global community"
Matilde P (Year 13)

Let us tell you about Ly Nhem and Tev Meas. Due to the great efforts of
United World Schools, as well as their own incredible determination,  they are part of the first generation of children to go through the entire school system at UWS La Muey. Going through primary school, and  currently finishing theirhigh school education, these girls are a prime example of the great impacts that education can have on small communities. With our help Nhem and Meas hope to study teaching at the university in order to realize their dream of becoming teachers for UWS in La Muey, so they can teach the next generation.
