A 26 year old born and bred in Tregaron, Ceredigion, has signed up to run this year’s Cardiff 10K road race, raising vital funds for the charity which has supported her younger brother following his life changing kidney disease diagnosis.
Angela Evans, has pledged to raise funds for Kidney Wales, the charity which supports thousands of patients and their families across Wales suffering from the effects of kidney disease.
Angela’s younger brother, Lewis, 24, was diagnosed with chronic renal failure in October 2015. A promising rugby player and athlete, Lewis began to feel unwell and after a visit to the doctor and subsequent tests, Lewis was told he was suffering from a progressive loss of kidney function, and would need a transplant as soon as a kidney match became available. As he waited for a match, Lewis then began the process of receiving dialysis treatment, three times a week in four hour long sessions.
Lewis, Angela, and their family were left shocked by the diagnosis, and Kidney Wales played a vital role in guiding and educating them throughout the process.
In January of this year, after 16 months on the transplant list, a successful match was found for Lewis, and he underwent a full kidney transplant at the University Hospital of Wales. Fortunately, the procedure went well, and Lewis’ body accepted the kidney. He was discharged soon after, but still regularly attends support sessions provided at the hospital by Kidney Wales.
Praising the work of the charity, Angela said: “The support provided by Kidney Wales genuinely changes people’s lives. Before Lewis was diagnosed with chronic renal failure, we knew nothing of the disease. It left him unable to play sport – his lifelong love – and that really affected the family.
“Kidney Wales have been absolutely fantastic; their support is second to none.”
Angela has been training for the race with an all-female group of friends in her local community, the Arwel’s Angels, who got together in Tregaron last autumn with the aim of racing in 5K and 10K charity runs across Wales. For the Cardiff 10K, Angela is running as a lone Angel, and is fundraising to support the research work conducted by Kidney Wales. She said: “When you’re hit with a shock like Lewis’ diagnosis, the panic of the unknown begins to set in and can really affect you. Kidney Wales are so helpful, and so informative at every stage of the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery process. Their work helps to bring about a feeling of normality, and gave us a feeling of control.
“I’m fundraising to help build awareness around the invaluable work they do to support kidney disease patients and their families.”
Speaking ahead of the race, Roy Thomas, Chief Executive of Kidney Wales said: “It’s so encouraging to see how Lewis, Angela, and family have come through such difficult times, and are looking towards the Cardiff 10K with optimism.
“Many families are faced with the challenges and hardships of dealing with kidney disease and many of these wonderful families go on to become excellent fundraisers for us.
“By taking on the Cardiff 10K, they are helping us to support families like their own and ensure more research and funds are being dedicated to kidney disease each year. Everyone at Kidney Wales wants to thank those who are raising money and taking part in this year’s 10K - good luck!”
