As I knew that I was going to fully retire at the beginning of April, I had planned to undertake a long cycle ride from Lands End to Lowestoft, the most westerly point to the most easterly point of Great Britain. I hadn’t intended to make it a charity ride, but events have occurred to make it appropriate to do so.

Over the past year I have watched my mother decline due to the degenerative effects of Dementia, culminating with her recent passing on the 16th April. I thought that it would be poignant to raise some funds for Dementia UK to help them with their work with sufferers from this condition, in her memory.

I intend to commence my cycle at Lands End on the 13th May and over the course of the following six days will finish my ride in Lowestoft after nearly 500 miles on the road. There will be some sacrifices that I will have to make on the way, like missing the Royal Wedding and the F.A. Cup Final, so it’s going to be difficult!

In addition, any money raised will be matched by my company, Fulmarus Ltd, and an equivalent donation will be made to the Steep House Residents Fund, which provides additional treats and items of interest, such as a aviary, for the residents to enjoy. In particular, this year, the fund raising is going towards a Vecta Mobile Sensory Unit (see picture below), which will be used principally for stimulating bed ridden residents in their rooms, although the other residents will benefit from it too. My mother spent the last six months of her life at Steep House, Petersfield, where she was cared for in a comfortable, secure environment, and it would be nice to acknowledge this and hopefully make some difference to the other residents, in her memory.

Please consider the above and if you are able, please donate to a good cause and benefit two!
